Glucan 1,4-alpha-maltohydrolase (maltogenic amylase, EC 3.2.1.133) is a potential catalyst for malto-oligosaccharide production. It is an amylolytic enzyme from glycosyl hydrolase family 13 (GH13). The enzyme catalyzes the hydrolysis of 1,4-alpha-D-glucosidic linkages in polysaccharides so as to remove successive alpha-maltose residues from the non-reducing ends of the chains. In addition, maltogenic amylase also acts on starch and related oligosaccharides.

For example, maltogenic amylase is utilized to increase the solubility of puerarin by transglycosylating, thus, to become a therapeutic agent of coronary heart disease, cardiac infarction, and alcoholism. The enzyme activity can be measured by the dinitrosalicylic acid (DNS) method, which relies on precise spectrophotometers.
