Candelilla Wax

Cat No.
EXTZ-917
Description
Candelilla Wax is a natural plant wax obtained from the leaves and stems of the candelilla shrub (Euphorbia antisyphilitica), native to the Chihuahuan Desert of northern Mexico and the southwestern United States. The crude wax is recovered by boiling the dried stalks in acidified water and refined by filtration into a light-colored, food-grade product. This refined grade is supplied in flake form as a yellow to light brown hard, brittle, lustrous solid with a melting range of 68.5-72.5°C. Candelilla wax consists primarily of odd-numbered n-alkanes together with esters, free acids, and resins. It is an excellent vegan hardener and structuring wax: it raises the hardness and gloss of other waxes without significantly increasing their melting point, and is used as a glazing agent and texturizer for chewing gum base and confectionery, as a moisture barrier for fresh produce, and as a structuring, film-forming, and gloss-imparting ingredient in lipsticks, lip balms, mascara, and other anhydrous cosmetic formulations.
