Product Overview

Ergosterol is the characteristic sterol of fungal cell membranes, where it serves a role analogous to cholesterol in animal cells. Upon ultraviolet irradiation it is converted to vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol), and it is therefore the standard raw material for vitamin D2 production. It is also widely used as a biochemical marker of fungal biomass and as a target in antifungal research.
