The material provides buffering during tanning, supports uniform penetration and distribution of the tanning agent, helps reduce surface over-tanning and grain roughness, and improves resistance to alkalinity so finished-leather quality is maintained under relatively high-pH conditions.

Main chrome tanning: typically 6-8% based on pelt weight. Retanning: typically 3-5% based on shaved wet-blue weight.
