Description
Potassium citrate, with the molecular formula C₆H₅O₇K₃·H₂O, appears as colorless or white crystalline particles or powder. It is odorless, has a salty taste, and gives a cool sensation. It is hygroscopic in air, tends to deliquesce, and easily forms lumps when stored for a long time. It is highly soluble in water, slowly soluble in glycerol, and insoluble in alcohol. Its solubility at room temperature is approximately 140 g/100 mL.
In the pharmaceutical industry, potassium citrate is used for hypokalemia, potassium deficiency, and alkalinization of urine. It is a commonly used drug for preventing kidney stones. In the tobacco and cigarette paper industry, potassium citrate can be used as an igniter and flavor enhancer. In addition, potassium citrate can also be formulated into high-grade fertilizers and is used in the papermaking and gold-plating industries.
