A flavoprotein. The bacterial enzyme enables bacteria to use trimethylamine as the sole source of carbon and energy. The mammalian enzyme is involved in detoxification of trimethylamine. Mutations in the human enzyme cause the inheritable disease known as trimethylaminuria (fish odor syndrome).
