Description
Akkermansia muciniphila, A. muciniphila is an oval-shaped gram-negative bacterium isolated from human feces. The bacterium was named after Dutch microbial ecologist Anton DL Akkermans in recognition of his contributions to the field.A. muciniphila is a commensal bacterium of the human gut and can survive on mucin from the intestinal mucus layer. Over the past decade, a growing number of studies have demonstrated reduced abundance of A. muciniphila found in diabetes, cardiovascular disease, disease enteropathy, and neurological disorders. Some studies have also demonstrated that tea or polyphenol-rich fruit diets can increase its abundance and help improve metabolic function in diabetic and obese individuals.
