Specificity
This enzyme releases α2-3, and α2-6 linked N-acetylneuraminic acid from complex carbohydrates. This enzyme will not efficiently cleave NeuAc α2-6 linked to N-acetylgalactosamine (GalNAc) when the GalNAc is labeled with a fluorophore.
Unit Definition
One unit is defined as the amount of enzyme required to catalyze the release of 1 μmole of p-nitrophenol from p-nitrophenyl-α-D-N-acetylneuraminic acid per minute at 37°C, pH 5.5.
