Estradiol 17beta-dehydrogenase (EC1.1.1.62) is an enzyme that catalyzes the oxidation of 17beta-estradiol to produce estrone, using NAD+/NADP+ as the redox cofactor. Estradiol 17beta-dehydrogenase is involved in the pathway of estradiol biosynthesis I (via estrone), which is part of the superpathway of steroid hormone biosynthesis. Estrogens are steroid hormones which are synthesized in the ovaries, breasts, adipose, and other tissues. They are critical to the sexual development , as well as the function of sexual organs.
