Glucose oxidase (EC is a flavin-dependent enzyme that catalyzes the oxidation of β-D-glucose at the first hydroxyl group, utilizing molecular oxygen as the electron acceptor to produce D-glucono-delta-lactone and hydrogen peroxide. Glucose oxidase is homodimeric glycoprotein with one tightly but noncovalently bound flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD) cofactor at the active site of each monomer. Glucose oxidase is a representative enzyme of the glucose/methanol/choline (GMC) family of oxidoreductases which oxidize alcohol substrates. Glucose oxidase was originally isolated and produced from the fungus Aspergillus niger, which remains the most common source of glucose oxidase utilized for glucose monitoring and other industrial applications. Since then glucose oxidases have been isolated from several different fungi as well as a few insects, such as Penicillium amagasakiense, Penicillium sp. and Streptomyces coelicolor. In addition to the name of glucose oxidase, other names used in common include glucose oxyhydrase, corylophyline, penatin, glucose aerodehydrogenase, microcid, beta-D-glucose oxidase, D-glucose oxidase, D-glucose-1-oxidase, beta-D-glucose:quinone oxidoreductase, glucose oxyhydrase, deoxin-1, and GOD.

Glucose oxidase is one of the many useful enzymes which are given by the nature. This enzyme plays a key role not only in digestive processes but also in overall human health, physical rejuvenation, and anti-aging more importantly. The reaction catalyzed by glucose oxidase effectively consumes the glucose while exhibiting significant activity against harmful organisms because of the production of hydrogen peroxide. Therefore, this is a crucial part of its digestive support and its multiple health benefits. Thus glucose oxidase is widely used in the area of diagnostics. For example, hydrogen peroxide can be used for the determination of free glucose in sera or blood plasma for diabetes management. In addition, glucose oxidase can be used as an additive in food industry thanks to its oxidizing function.

Despite of the wide use of glucose oxidase in diagnostics, food and pharmaceutical industries, activity assays of this enzyme using spectrophotometry are still complicated and difficult to perform in an industrial scale. Although activity measurement using other methods were reported before, standardized spectrophotometric assays are still desired by many researchers for the high reproducibility and convenient operations. Fortunately, Creative Enzymes has established reliable activity measurement protocols for glucose oxidase via spectrophotometry, thanks to the experienced in-house scientists who has always been devoting themselves into extensive studies on this enzyme. Our passion for high quality and unique customizability is only exceeded by our excellent reputation in the marketplace. Overall, Creative Enzymes is your trustworthy partner whenever you want to perform enzyme activity assays.
